Planning is your key to building a new home, addition, or finished basement with the least frustrations because without it, mistakes and misunderstandings will happen.

Making decisions now as opposed to during construction will make your project rewarding instead of disappointing.

I can't say enough about planning every aspect of your project. Every dollar and hour spent on planning, plans and specifications will save more in the end.

If you set up allowances for some selections, try to have no more than five. Be sure to make those selections way in advance of the time they are needed. Not only will the job run smoother, but you will know sooner how your budget is doing.

Begin planning by establishing a preliminary budget and work toward it. This tends to be harder than most expect. People have photos, ideas, and dreams of what they want, but don't know what they will cost. So there is often a trade off between the budget and finished plan.

Preliminary Budget

These prices per heated square foot are useless until all planning is done, but this is for a preliminary budget only.

Determine the amount of heated square feet there will be in your project and multiply that by both the low and high prices listed here.

These prices would be for standard types of construction and finishes. Adding a home theater, for example, to a basement finish could sufficiently increase the price. So if your your project will have special unique features, you will need to add that feature's value to your preliminary budget.
